Grapes To Wine

Grapes to wine, that is where it first starts. But do we actually know how long or what has to be done to make it happen. How does it happen?

I know I don’t know much on how they turn grapes into wine.

If you were to think about it, you first need a place to grow your grapes. I know it isn’t that easy. My husband actually works in a local vineyard here in Lillooet, B.C. He works in the field, caring for the grapes. He says there is a lot that goes into growing grapes. It’s not that simple.

Made me think about how grapes to wine actually even happens. Cause that is what wine is, it comes from grapes. Sounds easy, but complicated.

The local vineyard here is called Fort Berens Winery.

When we first heard of a vineyard coming here. We didn’t know anything about them. We didn’t think it would succeed. But it is doing really great.

I have another page here that tells some more on Fine Wine if you want to go and check it out also.

What Goes Into Growing Grapes??

Well, you need the right grapes. Depending on what kind of grapes will grow in the country where you will grow your grapes to wine.

  • test the dirt to see if it is missing nutrients
  • the right amount of grape plants
  • the vehicles and tools needed for growing them
  • Need someone with the knowledge of growing grapes
  • a person to know all know-how on what is needed to grow great grapes
  • access to water for your grapes
  • workers to help with your vineyard

YOU ACTUALLY THINK ABOUT IT ANYMORE. Many things go into you getting your wine that you enjoy and love. Whether you go to the store and get your wine.

Or you are one that would be in our Wine of the Month Club. Getting wine you can only receive through them. You will for sure know the difference between their wine and the wine you get from a liquor store.

When You Do Grow Grapes

It takes 5 years before anything can even be done with the grapes. Because the grapes need to mature before anything. Maybe less for certain grapes.

The plants need nutrients added to the dirt to get the quality and what not to the grapes.

Even when you want them tested. The vines of the grape plant. Alot goes into that also.

  • need a clip off the plant at different levels of the plant
  • need a clipping off a certain part of the branch
  • even a taste of a bushel of grapes
  • even tests on the inside of the plant
  • test off the outside of the plant also.

So if you think about it, they basically have to test different areas of the plant. All because of which part of the plant gets sun and which one doesn’t. Makes a difference in how much and how little sun the plant actually receives.

I didn’t even think that was an issue, but when it comes to picking the grapes. When they are mature enough to be picked. Pickers are told which plants to pick from and where. Because to get grapes to wine you need a specific grape for each wine made.

Pickers Need To Know Where To Pick

  • If they want the inside of the plant or the outside of the plant.
  • the owner needs certain grapes.
  • you can’t just pick ones you see
  • need a certain amount of grapes in one day

Grapes to Wine

A lot goes into picking day. They have a tester test it before they know when they can pick. Is it the right time of the week? Do the grapes taste right for the purpose they are needed for.

So when someone asks how hard is it to get grapes to wine. There is a lot that goes into the process. It is not exactly what you see on tv shows or in a movie.

Where someone has a bunch of grapes in a big wooden pot, someone stomping on the grapes. Making them all squished and the liquid would be your wine. Grape juice actually.

Still need more research to find out exactly what goes into turning grapes into wine.
