No One Talks About Getting Older

When I was younger I noticed no one talks about getting older. I know I was told what was expected of me when I was younger. But I really got to think about this when I was talking with my daughters. One is 14 and she is not thinking of grown up things yet. But my other daughter who is 30 now, is thinking about things now and what she is seeing.

She listened to things when she was younger, and sees oh ok. I now see what they mean when you get older you will know. I am kind of getting it. But that made me think of how much have I told her about growing up. Since no one talks about getting older, and I think family actually should.

I know that when I thought about getting older, I sure did want to grow old gracefully. Not look my age, but have the smarts to be my age. If that makes sense. So as I started to age, I take care of my skin from the outside and inside.

What do Kids know about getting older:

  • need to get your own place
  • pay bills (no clue what for)
  • be responsible for yourself
  • go to College or go get a Job

But what about Life skills, are the kids talk about this with their parents? Most likely not, and I know I try to mention this every chance I get.

Life skill or things never spoken

  • how to cook
  • Remember you need to clean your place or room( if you rent a room)
  • take out the garbage on a weekly basis
  • do your laundry at least once a week
  • Know you need to have a schedule of what your doing
  • how to budget your money for your needs

My Experience out On my Own

I was not told this by my mom, and of course I did not leave I was removed from her place. I was sent to be out on my own and live in a room I rented with my son. This was paid for of course since I was a minor, but this was an alternative to where I was to be sent. Because I had a baby with me, they needed me to live somewhere else.

Things I didn’t know-No one talks About Getting Older

  • I did already know how to do my own laundry.
  • Schedule- I just normally winged it.
  • Garbage either.
  • I didn’t really know how to cook. What I knew was how to make rice and oatmeal, and make a sandwich.
  • I didn’t know how to save my Money.
  • Bills I had was my buspass, which I found out after I had spent money each bus ride. To find it was cheaper to buy a buspass. I didn’t even know they existed.
  • Oh and the biggest was how to care for your baby by yourself. No help from others.
