Black Bears In Lillooet
Black bears are all over the area here in Lillooet. During the spring and summer, you may have a bear show up in your yard, or even just passing through the area. They are busy feeing on the fresh vegetation here along the roadsides, or even the hillsides and in towards the forest.
People here may see the bears near them, mainly cause of the fruit trees, berry patches and other food sources. This is why the local communites encourage to be responsible and also follow the wildlife rules to keep both people and bears safe. (Squamish-Lillooet Regional District)
I almost bumped into a Bear while at work at a local hotel in town. I got told about the bear from customers, when they came around the corner, just right from where I just came from. To not go around the corner, cause the bear was there walking by.
Bear careful and if you see a bear watch from afar, and don’t approach or feed them.
Cougars: Lillooet’s Secret Predators
Even though these are rarely seen, cougars live throughout the mountains and valleys around Lillooet. They are masters of staying hidden and are more active during dusk and dawn.
Even though they are something scary to see. They do play an important role in the local ecosystem here, by helping control deer population.
Think we only really know they are around, is people post pics on social media of what security cameras caught. However, you may see some evidence that they are here, from tracks, scat and reports of the sightings.
Just remember that wildlife is here, even though you may not see them at all.
Mule Deer Around Town
You may see more mule deer around town more often, sure more than couple years ago. Deer can be seen grazing at the edge of your lawn or near roads, parks and residential areas. More especially during the early morning and evening time.
Did you know the Lillooet region has a significant mule deer population and even has some winter habitat that helps to sustain these deer throughout the year.
In the spring you will see some cute little newborn fawns. Most think that the mom deer abandons her baby, but she is close by, and does return to care for them.
I have had the pleasure of having two baby fawns in my back yard. They are so cute, and they stayed close to the mom. Once they got a tiny bit older, they were able to run and explore. Remember, I said I had two fawns in my yard? Well, guess what! I now have only one. Something happened to the other baby, probably when they left the yard. I think one of the wildlife got the baby. But again that is the ecosystem we have here.
I get to enjooy the Wildlife in Lillooet BC, cause this is where I live and I am also from around this area.
Bighorn Sheep, and Mountain Wildlife
The Rugged cliffs and the rocky terrain that are surrounding area of Lillooet, make it possible to have Bighorn sheep here. You may go for a drive towards Seton Lake, you may just spot a bunch of them at the side of the lake. Over by the railway tracks, under a big tree over there, on your right side going towards Seton Lake.
If you look up on that mountain side, you may just spot a few Mountain goats too. They are so adorable, but they are so far up the mountain, that when you look for them. You will mainly only see something up there moving, and could be a goat. Binoculars can be used so you can see them better.
Higher elavations are the home to some mountain goats, coyotes, bobcats and other wildlife too, that thrive in these landscapes.
Eagles and Birds of Prey
We have many Eagles in Lillooet. I think that is what I love the most about living here, cause I sure didn’t see them in the city. You can see Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Hawks, Osprey, and Turkey Vultures found in this area. The Fraser River and the many nearby lakes provide a great habitat for all the many species of birds that stay here all throughout the whole year.
I have seen many eagles even flying above, while I walk to town. So at most times, there is no need for binoculars. Unless you go to the Landfill to see them all, then you will need them there.
You may even be lucky to see an Eagle or two by the Old Bridge in town. Osprey have been seen down there also, possibly still have a nest down there too.
