Making Salmon Patties

Making salmon patties is far easier than you would think. A can of salmon and some binding ingredients are all you need. It May sound a bit complicated, but if you think about it, it isn’t.

Why do people eat salmon patties, when you could just have a hamburger. Well, think about the times when some of us couldn’t afford much. Then we ate what we could afford.

So not many families got fresh meat, or even hamburger for one of their meats that they could afford. I know even right now, some families still struggle with what they can buy for their meals.

Stretching Your Food Budget

Many struggle with what they can afford for their families. Many want the best for them, but right now. They are doing their best, and just can’t afford it.

Sometimes you may go for a meatless dinner once or twice a week. I think we all eat to much meat anyways. Not good for your diet or your health, to have too much meat.

Going for a meatless meal would be something like- having beans for dinner. Now, what does that mean?? Having a homemade chili would be one meal. Or even a bean soup could be another one.

I usually would just fry up some hashbrowns and after they are almost done. I would add about half can of baked beans to the hashbrowns. Continue to fry, while adding whatever spice I want to add to it. Maybe I would add some onion powder or garlic powder or maybe just salt and pepper. This is something I always made when I was hungry, but didn’t have much to cook with.

Ever Struggle??

Yes, I did struggle at one or two times in my lifetime. But again, who hasn’t. I know I did while growing up and while I was a new mom also. Again, even later in life also. So I have learned to be creative with what I had in my fridge and cupboard.

How to make a meal stretch and make sure no one went hungry. I know my mom was good at making meals out of all that she had on hand. I was surprised at some of the yummy meals that she made. She sure did make the dollar stretch. We did eat alot of beans and have alot of sandwiches too. But again, we still were able to have something to eat.

Even if it doesn’t sound like much, she sure made it seem like alot.

I know I try to think back to then, and what we had. But I honestly, have no idea what we ate. Because I was a kid, and who cared, it only had to taste good enough to eat. So it must of been good, because I did eat it.

I do remember seeing my mom make salmon patties a few times. We used to get freshly caught salmon also. Now that was a great treat. We had family that would bring us Salmon they caught out of the Fraser River. This is when I lived down Vancouver B.C. Where salmon cost so much to get, and the closest we got to salmon was the canned salmon.

So Back To Salmon Patties

You can make patties also using Tuna instead. It doesn’t have to be salmon, it is whatever you have on hand. You can even just make potato patties also. Did you know, that they even have chicken in a can? I was surprised when the first time I had seen it. I have tried it, and I prefer to have it mixed with macaroni in a macaroni salad. I didn’t care for it in a sandwich. I never have tried it in a patty form though.

Now for these I just shred one potato and then squeeze out all the water out of it. To get rid of the starch in the potato. You could make up a few of these. Of coarse you do have to squeeze out all the water out of each potato, as you go along. After you mix in an egg to moisten and add more binding power.

When you get better at making these, you can go ahead and add an onion. But you need to remember as you add more ingredients, it loses it’s binding power even more. So you may need to add another egg or something to help to hold it together. Or just mince your onion, or even just use green onion instead. Or even onion powder is even better.

But of course, this is just for flavour. Is why you are adding more ingredients to it. That is why I suggested the onion powder, or even garlic salt, if you wanted.
